Why is the Doreen bra as popular as ever

You might not immediately recognise the name, but the chances are you’ve encountered Doreen at some point in your life. That’s because for the last 50 years, the Triumph Doreen bra has been a staple of women’s wardrobes around the world. Known for its non-wired, soft quality the bra is a best-seller, offering both comfort and support to women of all sizes.

As Doreen turns 50, we think it’s high time that she be celebrated. So, we’ve put together a little something to show you why the Doreen continues to be a best seller, and hopefully persuade you to invest for yourself. So, without further ado, here’s why the Doreen continues to be a favourite of women of all shapes and sizes, and will never go out of style.

Doreen’s history

The Triumph Doreen bra is manufactured by a company called Triumph, who have been making underwear and women’s shapewear for over 100 years. They pride themselves on creating innovative designs. And, when it was first released, the Doreen was just that.

The bra first hit shelves in 1967, and took the underwear market by storm. While the world may be unrecognisable from what it was in the 1960s, the Doreen has remained a constant in many people’s lives.

The bra does has some unique features that make it stand out in the saturated underwear market. It largely goes against the grain of typical bras in the modern world. Most lingerie adverts will show you images of airbrushed women wearing smaller cup sizes, but the average size of a Doreen bra is a 36D. It’s the perfect bra for ‘real’ women – no matter your bust shape or size.

One article describes the design as ‘not modern – and certainly not sexy’, but what the bra lacks in sex appeal it more than makes up for in other areas. The design of the bra takes into account what women need most in a good design – comfort and support. So, while it may not be the first choice to make women feel alluring on a hot date, it’s the perfect solution for everyday wear.

The Doreen’s main features have remained largely the same since it was first released to market at the end of the 1960s. The development of the bra has taken into consideration both fabric and the best construction to offer comfort and support for women of all sizes.

Here are some key facts about the Doreen’s design:

  • The bra is actually comprised of 46 separate pattern pieces
  • It is made of 80% Polyamide, 13% Elastane, and 7% cotton
  • It is both wire-free and non-padded
  • The front section of the bra is rigid. This stops the chest from jumping or bouncing
  • The broad straps ensure that full support is given, and there’s little risk of them coming undone
  • The style is designed to give full coverage of the wearer’s cleavage
  • The ‘modulas’ of the bra means it can stop even back aches and pains

These key features mean that the Doreen secures repeat buyers, with a loyal following around the world.

Doreen’s customers

You might be surprised to know that the Doreen is the ‘world’s best selling bra’, as it doesn’t get very much advertising or airtime. This is because the manufacturers, Triumph, have sadly been trying to scurry away from Doreen’s image for several years.

The company have been trying their hardest to market to a younger generation, a generation which is – for the most part – looking for something a little more ‘stylish’ than the humble Doreen. For this reason, they have opted to leave the bra out of their marketing campaigns in recent years.

This isn’t to say the bra is declining in popularity, however. The Doreen has a loyal fan-base. According to research, the Doreen’s main buyers are from the ‘baby boomer’ generation. These women have been buying the bra since it was first brought to market, and have stuck with it for a number of reasons.

We think that it is a huge shame that the Doreen doesn’t get more appreciation. The bra has been giving women around the world huge comfort and support for 50 years. While she may not be the most stylish or glamorous one at the party, she’s a sturdy and reliable classic and she’ll never let you down.

Totally agree Triumph are missing a trick by hiding the well made fantastic fitting Doreen away. Is the only bra I buy from Triumph. We need to start a campaign group! Also would be great if they brought back smaller back sizes.

Another thing: Doreen has not succumbed to the awful rounded implant look. Instead she carries her girls quite high and with deducts years from her owner with a pert shape, not too pointy but with a bit of a nod to the sharper profile popular in the the sixties and seventies.

I've been wearing Doreen bras for years. I'm allergic to underwires in bras. Because I'm in a wheelchair I find other bras really hurt me. But Doreen bras are really comfy and don't dig in. I'm in my late 30s. I've been wearing them since I was able 17. My mum was bigger chested and I'm the same. They're amazing, my mum always wore them too. She suggested I tried them.
